Historic Downtown Litchfield

A classic mix of traditional businesses, historical places, restaurants and specialty and antique shops can be found in Litchfield’s historic downtown district. This 12 square-block area is filled with points of interest, and is within easy walking distance of the Carnegie Library and Litchfield Veterans’ Memorial Garden.

Litchfield Public Library
400 N. State St.
217-324-3866

The Litchfield Public Library is located in the center of downtown. Housed in a historic 1904 Carnegie building, the Library is home to over 33,000 books, videos, periodicals, and one special animal, Stacks the Library Cat. The library features an extensive genealogy and local history collection, as well as research and recreational reading materials. Public access computers are available, along with many programs and other services.

Walton Park

Walton Park, located on S. State St., is an 11 acre park with a 40 acre lake. It is open every year from April 1st to October 31st. The park has four pavillions with barbeque grills, open picnic areas, a lighted softball diamond, a basketball court, horseshoe pits, disc golf, volleyball, rest rooms, playground equipment, and two tracks for remote control vehicles. Fishing is allowed but swimming is not. Canoes, row boats or boats with trolling motors are the only water craft allowed on the lake. The park and lake date back to 1856, and was the site of the first local Chautauqua, held in 1905, which featured William Jennings Bryan and Billy Sunday.

Veterans’ Memorial Garden

The Veterans’ Memorial Garden is located on the east side of Library Park, directly behind the Litchfield Library. Dedicated on Memorial Day 2007, the Memorial Garden is a beautiful monument to the local soldiers who fought for our country. This memorial is laid out in a long graceful arc with granite markers showing the names of those who served from World War I to Afghanistan. Several benches along the path and a flagpole provide a serene area for personal reflection.
